MOVEMENT

Issue 19, Spring 2023

(Table of Contents is below this intro)

“Movement” is a key element of our ecosystem: from tides to snails, from migration to nutrient flow. Oh, and one can’t forget geology and rain.

“Movement” is also the theme of this issue of Salish Magazine, and we’ve got articles for you about those kinds of movement and more…

What roles in the ecosystem are played by splashes of water? photo by John F. Williams

This issue is also part of our continuing experiment to discover better ways to discuss nature from an ecosystem perspective.

Sure, field guides and scientists focusing on each species separately are useful. But if I look in the “local nature” section of a bookstore, conspicuous by their absence are books that tell stories about how the ecosystem works, including  elements such as movement, relationships, and feedback loops.

We’re trying to find ways to fill that void, and since we haven’t found much in the way of precedents or models, we’re experimenting with methods in Salish Magazine.

Toward that end, we really appreciate feedback from you, especially about this experiment. What does an ecosystem perspective mean to you? And how does one go about telling stories with a rich, ecosystem perspective?

Please send us your thoughts. Our Subscribe Page has a form you can use to contact us.

Happy Spring!

Underground Movement

Underground Movement

by Amy Porter
Spring 2023p

Pocket gophers are considered “ecosystem engineers”. Their movement of soil alters the soil’s structure and chemistry, which affects plant community composition and dynamics.

Low tide opens a window for the beach walker onto the vibrant world of eelgrass meadows: places where mysterious creatures hide, hunt, graze, migrate, and lay eggs.

Lizard’s Locomotion

Lizard’s Locomotion

by Karin Kersteter
Spring 2023

The lizard continued its journey up the street, traveling under the cover of the leaves. I could see the leaves rippling as it moved along on its way to the nature area.

Turbulence

Turbulence

by Rebekah Boettcher
Spring 2023

We stand still like the heron, watching him as he watches the water…my thoughts sink beneath the water, about the chain of nutrients down to the very base of the food web.

Learning from a Snail’s Pace

Learning from a Snail’s Pace

by Michelle Ryder
Spring 2023

Mapfire is a great source of amusement on a budget. A gastropod, she races around on her stomach. One of her organs is cloaked in the lore of cupid: the love dart.

Plant motion

Plant motion

At first look it would appear plants do not have the luxury of movement. This article, with many stunning photos of iced plants, discusses how plants do weather the weather.

Gray whales engage in amazing migrations up and down the west coast of the U.S. Their routes make it somewhat predictable where they can be seen at different times of the year
