Volunteers

YOU CAN VOLUNTEER

Salish Magazine is a nonprofit project that relies mainly on volunteer efforts.

Would you like to help?

Below are details for how you can volunteer to:

  • contribute content such as prose, photos, video, poetry, artwork, audio, etc.
  • edit contributed content
  • fact-check content
  • proofread content after it has been turned into a web page
  • serve on our Salish Magazine Committee

contribute content

Each quarter (spring, summer, autumn, winter) Salish Magazine features a “theme.” The magazine content for that quarter will address that theme. Typically our themes are slightly abstract, to encourage content that highlights the relationships between parts of our ecosystem rather than just focusing on a single species or one type of object.

Some themes from past issues include: tide pools, forest connections, wetlands, movement, defensive techniques, and who lives in the soil?

Prose, poetry, photos, video, artwork, and audio are all welcome.

Well ahead of each issue, we send out a “Call for Submissions” that describes the theme, lists deadlines, and contains other relevant information. If you would like to receive these, please send us your name via the form below, and we’ll put your name on our mailing list.

Current “Calls” and our Style Guide are linked to below:

edit contributed content

Salish Magazine is aimed at a diverse audience, from young adults to elders. We try to offer content that is informative without requiring much pre-existing, specialized knowledge.

So our editors have two tasks:

  1. Make sure that the content is easy to understand and fun to read.
  2. Make sure that the prose conforms to our stylistic conventions.

If you’d like to volunteer to help us with the editing, please contact us via the form below and tell us about relevant experience you’ve had.

fact-check contributed content

We want Salish Magazine to be a credible source of information. Our fact-checkers have expertise in diverse areas. We send draft articles to fact-checkers with expertise in relevant areas to allow them to identify and correct factual errors.

If you’d like to volunteer to help us with the fact-checking, please contact us via the form below and tell us about your area of expertise.

proofread contributed content

After editing and fact-checking, the final content is sent to our web layout technician who creates a web page for it.

Once that is finished, we send it to a proofreader to make sure that no typos, duplications, or other errors have crept into the content. Typically, proofreaders are persons who enjoy seeing that small details are in order.

If you’d like to volunteer to help us with the proofreading, please contact us via the form below and tell us about relevant experience you’ve had.

salish magazine committee

We’re putting together a “Salish Magazine Committee” to provide guidance for how our magazine evolves and to help guide a managing editor who we hope to contract before long.

Here is a link to a brief description of what I am envisioning the committee will do and some of the issues that I hope the committee can discuss and provide some guidance about:
