POTPOURRI

Issue 14, Winter 2021

Thomas Noland, Guest Managing Editor

This issue of Salish Magazine is a little different. Instead of having a specific focus, we present a potpourri of articles on a variety of topics.

The word potpourri in modern vernacular has many meanings. Usually it describes a pleasant smelling collection of dried botanicals and oils. On “Jeopardy!” it is a group of questions that are left over from previous rounds that people have not chosen, so these questions are collected together under the category potpourri. In the middle ages the word came from the French. During the Napoleonic wars they occupied the Spanish city of Burgos where they encountered a stew known as “olla podrida.” The literal French translation of potpourri is “rotten pot.” Today Meriam Webster defines a potpourri as a miscellaneous collection. Strange how words change their meaning as time goes by.

Have fun with this issue and happy holiday season. Let us know what you think.
