The dense frenzy of gulls in specific places on the beach made me curious, but continuous sightings of sea lions and harbor porpoises suggested that there was a lot of feeding going on.

I took a closer look, and I saw tiny eggs on seaweed covered parts of the beach. The tide wasn’t low enough to show the eelgrass, but I’ll bet that it had lots of herring visitors as well.

It seemed like a pretty fitting sight just before I sat down to write this intro to our spring Water Places issue.

There was some frolicking in the water, but it was too far away for me to get really clear photos. However, I was able to get one image that was good enough to see the ears on a sea lion.

Spring 2024

I decided to watch a tidal exchange at Seattle’s Discovery Park. I established my base for the day. A dozen feet away, quiet, barely breaking waves approached the shore.

The creek’s south fork emerges from springs and seeps and begins its path through residential neighborhoods including mine. Beaver were soon to be our own near neighbors.
